This program provides a basic overview of native Kentucky forest trees and how to recognize them in spring and summer or fall and winter. The program will be approximately 50% classroom study and 50% field investigations.

The program will include:

  • Basic morphological characteristics & tree identification terminology

  • How to use a simplified dichotomous tree key using leaves as the primary field identification characteristic

  • How to identify trees from leaf shape, bark, fruit and other useful field characteristics

  • Tree Identification resources for Kentucky trees

  • Interesting aspects of native trees that will help you remember them

  • Ecological significance, habitat and forest structure
